Clare County Council passed the following motion at a recent council meeting.
"Having due consideration of all the facts put forward by the committee to restore County Clare into its rightful place as a full member of the proud providence of Connaught, Clare County Council intends to pursue this goal as quickly as possible with a view to having negotiations completed by December 2009."
A County Clare Councillor is quoted as saying:
"We have already had informal contacts with the county councils in Connaught and they have been very supportive of the idea. We will begin formal discussions with the councils during the coming months and hope to have negotiations finalised by December 2009. As this is a big step for the county the proposal will be fully explained and debated and a referendum held in the summer of 2010 with a suggested date of 1st January 2011 for the move of County Clare from Munster to Connaught. "
A spokespersion for Mayo County Council said:
"Clare has been outside of Connaught for far too long and we welcome the decision by them to initiate a move from Munster to Connaught. Now that Irish Rugby can hold its head up high after winning the Grand Slam we feel that the addition of Clare to Connaught will help the Connaught Rugby team emulate the achievements of Munster and we look forward to a speedy move for Clare from Munster to Connaught.
Below you will find links to some of the material that the "From Clare to Here" committee has put forward as the valid reasons why County Clare should be in Connaught. These will be useful in the ongoing discussions leading to the proposed referendum in 2010

Was County Clare once part of Connaught
and if so should it join Connaught
again?
(and even if it wasn't should it
be?)

Rumour has it that in the not so distant past Clare as a
bona fide member of that illustrious group of counties west
of the Shannon was in fact regarded as part of Connaught.
Oliver Cromwell with his
"To Hell or Connaught"
probably thought so and we have found maps and other
evidence that might lead to this conclusion. Here we present
some of the evidence and invite you to check it out and add
your own thoughts to the discussion.
Of course whether this is true or not is a mute point,
the real question is should County Clare become part of
Connaught now?
If you have the time check out the evidence and let
us know what you think.
